# Update project status

> Launch, pause, resume or close a project.

Changes a project's status.

## Path parameters

**id** `string` *required*

Project ID.

## Body

**status** `string` *required*

`ACTIVE`, `PAUSED` or `CLOSED`.

## Allowed transitions

| From | To | Effect |
| - | - | - |
| `DRAFT` | `ACTIVE` | Launches the project. Requires a `SCREENER` [attachment](https://docs.emporiaresearch.com/demand-api/upload-attachment.md). |
| `ACTIVE` | `PAUSED` | Stops new respondents from entering. |
| `PAUSED` | `ACTIVE` | Reopens the project. |
| `DRAFT`, `ACTIVE` or `PAUSED` | `CLOSED` | Ends the project. `CLOSED` is final. |

## Automatic pauses

An `ACTIVE` project pauses on its own when:

* `completes` reaches `targetNSize` and `pauseAtTarget` is `true`.
* More than 30 respondents have started and the measured incidence rate is under half the project's `incidenceRate`. We email `contactEmail`, with your Emporia project manager copied, to agree next steps.

## Response

Returns the updated project.

## Errors

General errors are listed in the [Overview](https://docs.emporiaresearch.com/demand-api/overview.md#errors).

| Status | Code | When |
| - | - | - |
| 400 | `INVALID_STATUS` | `status` isn't `ACTIVE`, `PAUSED` or `CLOSED`. |
| 404 | `PROJECT_NOT_FOUND` | No project with this ID exists for your account. |
| 409 | `INVALID_STATUS_TRANSITION` | The change isn't an allowed transition. |
| 409 | `SCREENER_REQUIRED` | Launching without a `SCREENER` attachment. |
